I specialize in therapeutic massage (otherwise known as deep tissue massage or neuromuscular therapy), sports massage, and myofascial release for active bodies. This encompasses a series of techniques used to address the root causes of soft tissue problems in the muscles, joints, and fascia or connective tissues of the body. Where you feel pain in your body is not always where the pain is actually coming from. My approach is to not just rub what hurts, but to work through the puzzle of soft tissue issues to fix the dysfunctioning, weak, injured, tense, or sore muscles that are causing the pain in the first place. I work with you to build a picture of what your body has gone through, the activities you love to do, what you do on a regular basis, as well as what your goals are and where you’d like to be in order to give you the best outcome possible.
Specific techniques include...
Trigger point therapy
Trigger points are small adhesions in the muscle tissues that refer pain to other areas of the body. I find these spots and facilitate the tissue's healing process.
Cross-fiber friction
Tense muscle fibers often stick together and restrict range of motion. I find these tight bands and pull the fibers apart to release tension and get your body moving better.
Myofascial Release
Fascia is the connective tissue that runs from head to toe, essentially connecting you to yourself. When you get injured, this tissue can harden off, causing stubborn restrictions that are difficult to stretch out. I practice the John Barnes method of Myofascial Release, looking for bad holding patterns and distortions in the symmetry of the body that point me to where fascia may be restricted and using a gentle, hands-on method, releasing them to open up space in your body.
Swedish Massage
Swedish is the foundation for most all western-based techniques. Using long strokes at the desired pressure level, Swedish can decrease stress, promote relaxation, reduce pain, and improve mood. This is a great approach if nothing really hurts and you’re just coming to see me to relax!
Prenatal Massage
Massage for pregnancy, of course. This approach is more on the relaxation side than deep tissue, and can help reduce pain and stress while promoting relaxation while your little one grows inside of you.
